In addition to the finalists, the 2020 ULI Urban Open Space Awards jury also recognized the contributions that the following open-space projects and programs have made to their communities.

Gerald D. Hines, founder and chairman of the Houston-based global real estate firm Hines, passed away at home on August 23. A ULI Life Trustee and benefactor, Hines was an avid supporter of the Institute for more than 60 years.

During a recent ULI webinar hosted by ULI Kansas City titled “Equity in Parks,” experts in their fields discussed the recent report released by the Institute’s Advisory Services program and shared their perspectives on how to make Kansas City a better place through the creation of an equitable park system. One of the conclusions of the report was that the city must establish a more equitable process for parks and recreation investment in hopes of tackling racial divisions.

ULI Boston/New England and other local partners recently hosted a webinar designed to provide actionable steps to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion within the commercial real estate industry. Citing research by McKinsey & Company, speakers said that companies in the top quartile for ethnic and cultural diversity on their executive teams were 33 percent more likely to experience above-average profitability than companies in the lowest quartile.

Themes of identity, governmental responsibility, and local empowerment in cities were discussed by a small group of experts during a May 20 webinar hosted by ULI Asia Pacific. While the discussion leaders each offered their own talking points, all agreed that governance and design play crucial roles in the establishment of a modern community.

The ULI Center for Sustainability and Economic Performance has announced the addition of three new members to its executive board from industry-leading organizations such as JBG Smith, ZOM, HR&A.

Demonstrating social value and the impact of real estate on a community is becoming more integrated into the decision-making and investment strategies for real estate. During a ULI Europe webinar, panelists said that the biggest challenge was addressing how the multifaceted nature of social impact can be measured accurately.

ULI has appointed David Faulkner as its new president for the Asia Pacific region. Faulkner, who most recently was managing director, valuation and advisory services, at Colliers International in Hong Kong, takes the position immediately, leading the Institute’s activities across Asia Pacific. Faulkner will lead members and staff to deliver impact programs such as Advisory Services and UrbanPlan, as well as the region’s virtual and in-person events program, including the REImagine virtual forum, the ULI Asia Pacific Convivium, and the ULI Asia Pacific Summit, which next year will be held in Tokyo in May.

Kansas City, Missouri, can help tackle the city’s racial division by establishing a more equitable process for parks and recreation investment, according to a report released by ULI. The report advises the city to listen to the broad-based needs of the community and establish a new parks conservancy to raise funds, advocate for improvements, and deliver programs that activate the public realm.

Many owners have already picked off the low-hanging fruit of installing LEDs, and upgrading equipment where budgets allow. Modernization—and specifically, the ability to leverage tools to take a deeper, more granular dive and capture more operational data—is allowing owners to identify hidden inefficiencies, reduce energy use, and boost net operating income.

Total new home sales in master-planned communities tracked by RCLCO are up over 16 percent from a year earlier, despite the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the company’s midyear survey. The 50 top-selling master-planned communities (MPCs) in the country sold almost 7 percent more homes than the communities that made up last year’s top 50 list, according to RCLCO data.

ULI’s new online Foundations of Real Estate (FoRE) curriculum is targeted to undergraduate students at liberal arts colleges and universities. FoRE is a key part of the Institute’s efforts to identify, diversify, and broaden the pool of young people interested in a real estate career. The curriculum is offered through the ULI Learning program, which includes a variety of digital education courses as well as topical webinars provided to ULI members and prospective members.

Marnix Galle, executive chairman of Belgian developer Immobel, has been appointed ULI Europe Chairman, serving on a voluntary basis for a two-year term starting on July 1, 2020, and will join the ULI Global Board of Directors. He succeeds outgoing Europe Chairman Juergen Fenk, member of the executive board, SIGNA Holding GmbH.
