A return to the “old normal” before the global coronavirus pandemic is neither possible nor desirable, a panel of retail leaders agreed at “Experience the Experience,” ULI Asia Pacific’s premier retail event of 2021.

ULI MEMBER–ONLY CONTENT: Commercial real estate is likely to have a good year in 2021—despite the devastation caused by the coronavirus, according to industry leaders at the 27th annual ULI/McCoy Symposium on Real Estate Finance.

A ULI Chicago task force has been working to expand housing options in the Chicagoland area by addressing regulatory barriers to the creation of accessory dwelling units (ADUs).

The climate plan outlined by U.S. President-elect Joe Biden’s administration is significant in that it reaffirms a commitment to addressing climate challenges, said panelists participating in a recent webinar hosted by the ULI Center for Sustainability and Economic Performance. The plan would also provide considerable resources to support and propel innovation throughout the real estate industry in key areas such as energy efficiency, carbon emission mitigation, and climate change resilience.

There is still time to register for ULI Europe’s flagship event, the ULI Europe Conference, taking place February 8–10, for the first time as a virtual event. Keynote speakers participating in the conference include Lord Norman Foster, founder of Foster + Partners; Carlos Moreno, associate professor at Sorbonne University Paris and a leading proponent of the 15-minute city; Peter Frankopan, professor of global history at Worcester College, Oxford University; Philippe Close, mayor of Brussels; and Ric Lewis, executive chairman of Tristan Capital.

ULI full member Christopher Coes has jointly published a multimedia essay through the Brookings Institution titled “The Great Real Estate Reset,” which cites the cyclical nature of the U.S. real estate industry as a whole and the opportunity to think differently in the year ahead given the current economic situation.

Eighty-four professionals in real estate development, planning, design, engineering, finance, and health care from around the globe have been selected to participate in the fourth cohort of the ULI Health Leaders Network. Due to the unique circumstances resulting from the pandemic that have required this cohort to be virtual, program administrators have increased the number of health leaders accepted for Cohort 4, which has been split into two subcohorts for programming.

Gerald D. Hines, founder and chairman of the Houston-based global real estate firm Hines, passed away at home on August 23. A ULI Life Trustee and benefactor, Hines was an avid supporter of the Institute for more than 60 years.
