Alex Rose Donates $1 Million to Expand ULI Advisory Services Program

The ULI Foundation (ULIF) has announced that Alex J. Rose, executive vice president for Continental Development Corporation, has donated $1 million to support ULI’s Advisory Services program, which offers expertise and technical assistance to communities facing complex land use challenges.

“For 75 years, the Advisory Services program has played a central role in ULI’s service to communities, offering local governments and stakeholders the opportunity to collaborate with top experts to address wide-ranging issues from disaster recovery to housing shortages,” said ULI Foundation campaign co-chair Doug Abbey. “Where else can you find eight to ten land use experts from around the world to volunteer a week to study a challenging issue? Advisory Services works because dedicated leaders like Alex have shared their expertise countless times, and we are grateful he has chosen to further his support of this important work.”

This gift is a contribution to the ULI Foundation’s first capital campaign, Our Cities, Our Future, which aims to raise $100 million in support of the Institute’s global mission. Rose’s donation will further the Advisory Services program’s reach and impact in diverse communities across the United States.

“I am grateful to Alex for his generous contribution to the Foundation and for his unwavering dedication to Advisory Services,” said ULIF president Janice Periquet. “With his leadership and support, we are building a $7.5 million endowment, which will secure long-term funding for the program and ensure no community in need is turned away solely because of a lack of resources. We hope his initial commitment will inspire other members who have been privileged to serve on these panels to join us in creating a brighter future for communities nationwide and throughout the globe.”

“For more than 25 years I have been volunteering for local and national Advisory Services assignments, because they are the best way I, as a land use professional, and we, as an Institute, can help communities and cities everywhere execute ULI’s mission. Panels create the basis of community dialogue and problem solving for land use challenges as diverse as corridor and district re-visioning, specific asset reuse and redevelopment, infrastructure, attainable housing, resiliency, and sustainability. This is ULI members volunteering their time and expertise to spur tangible impacts in the communities where we live, work and play,” said Rose. “I can think of no better way to support ULI and its mission execution.”

For more than three decades, Rose has championed ULI’s mission. As a ULI Trustee and a member of the ULI Foundation’s Charles Fraser Society and James J. Curtis Society for Planned Giving, Rose has cemented an immediate and lasting impact on the organization. He has chaired or served on over 40 ULI Advisory Services panels, primarily focusing on downtown and transit corridors, along with office and mixed-use development. He has also previously served as Chair of ULI’s Los Angeles District Council Executive Committee and Chair of ULI’s Commercial and Retail Development Council.

Rose leads all development, acquisition, disposition, and redevelopment activities for Continental Development Corporation, whose holdings span nearly 5 million square feet (464,500 sq m) in Los Angeles County’s South Bay and San Francisco. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the California Science Center Foundation; on the Advisory Board of The Bay Club; and on the Board of Business Advisors of Tideline Partners. He is a frequent mentor to students and young professionals through programs organized by ULI, the University of California, Los Angeles, and the University of Southern California.
