Modern-day food halls update the traditional market experience by hosting purveyors of specialty foods, along with restaurants and small-scale shops. This video showcases two historic sites that were redeveloped into food halls that have become hubs of activity and commerce within their communities: Union Station in Denver and the Packing House in Anaheim, California. Across the United States, food halls are growing in popularity as anchors for mixed-use projects and as landmark attractions that can catalyze nearby development.

In response to growing interest in the Institute’s product councils, ULI is expanding the program, adding five brand-new councils and five new flights of existing councils in 2018. Two of the new council chairs share what makes the council experience unique and what makes a good candidate to join a council.

In a keynote address to 2017 Fall Meeting attendees, ULI Global Chairman Tom Toomey emphasized that the overarching goal of the Institute’s leadership is to ensure that ULI delivers consistently high value to members.

Retail is the pulse of any vibrant urban environment, including downtown Los Angeles (DTLA). Just ask Avison Young’s Derrick Moore, who has brokered some 400 DTLA retail leasing deals in the last few years.

Urban theorist Richard Florida warned of “a growing divide between places that are winning and places that are failing to keep up.” That societal split is the subject of his latest book, The New Urban Crisis: How Our Cities Are Increasing Inequality, Deepening Segregation, and Failing the Middle Class—and What We Can Do About It.

Many U.S. cities continue to grapple with what to do about homelessness arising from a shortage of affordable housing coupled with local not-in-my-backyard resistance to creating it, according to speakers at a panel on the issue at ULI’s 2017 Fall Meeting in Los Angeles.

ULI Americas Chairman Trish Healy welcomed attendees to the 2017 ULI Fall Meeting with remarks affirming the Institute’s role as an industry leader. “Everything ULI is, everything ULI does is about member leadership. As a ULI member, each of you is de facto an industry leader, providing our communities access to the responsible land use expertise they need,” Healy said.

ULI’s 2017 Fall Meeting began on an inspirational note with a gala hosted by the ULI Foundation to honor longtime leading member Roy Hilton March.

ULI and the National League of Cities (NLC) have announced that mayors from four cities—Columbus, Ohio; Richmond, Virginia; Salt Lake City, Utah and Tucson, Arizona—have been selected as the 2018 class of Daniel Rose Land Use Fellows by the Rose Center for Public Leadership.
