ULI Indiana is the latest addition to the global cohort of ULI national and district councils participating in ULI’s Art in Place program. Working both individually and as a group, each council aims to connect artists, developers, and community voices to drive more inclusive and participatory real estate outcomes.
In addition to ULI Indiana, the Art in Place cohort includes a total of eight ULI national and district councils in Austin, Texas; Cleveland, Ohio; France; Germany; Hong Kong; Louisiana; and NW Arkansas. Each participating council is organizing local awareness-building events and technical assistance activities designed to advance equitable outcomes, empower collective action, and repair the social fabric through creative placemaking and the arts.
“We are dedicated to sparking meaningful conversations about the built environment across Indiana, including the business case for connecting creatives and real estate decisionmakers early in the development cycle to ensure more equitable and inclusive spaces,” said Aletha Dunston, ULI Indiana Chair and Director of Indianapolis Economic Development. “Indiana punches above its weight class in our depth of development professionals and the creative class, and we hope to leverage these strengths to foster a dialogue that contributes to national best practices that benefit our peer communities. Fundamentally, we hope to find ways to help artists better understand how to plug-in to developments and help developments feature a more authentic quality of place and culture.”
ULI Indiana joins at the program’s midpoint. Since launching at the ULI 2022 Fall Meeting in Dallas, teams have hosted a variety of events and activities to connect artists and real estate professionals. The program will conclude in April of 2024 with a showcase of lessons learned at ULI’s next Spring Meeting in New York.
“The addition of ULI Indiana provides the opportunity to explore how to forge stronger relationships between artists and real estate decisionmakers in midsized metro areas” said William Herbig, ULI Senior Director and Art in Place project manager. “The local perspectives, barriers and opportunities uncovered in Indianapolis will no doubt prove transferable to towns and cities in similar markets across the U.S.”
