Speakers Announced for ULI’s Building the Resilient City Conference

The ULI Urban Resilience Program will present the Building the Resilient City conference at the Hyatt Regency in San Francisco on September 4 and 5. Join your peers and experts in real estate, finance, climate risk, and policy to learn how development can minimize loss and mitigate risk, and how smart development can uncover new opportunities in an uncertain future. Learn how resilience and climate change will affect your work and how to develop plans for your community to survive and thrive in the face of adversity.

Panel discussions planned for the conference include Kathleen Carey, executive vice president and chief content officer of ULI, moderating a discussion between Lynn Thurber, chairman of ULI and chairman of LaSalle Investment Management, and conference cochairs Hamid Moghadam, CEO of Prologis, and Jonathan Rose, president of Jonathan Rose Companies LLC, about why resilience matters to the real estate industry.

Rose will also moderate a panel titled “The Human and Social Dimensions of Resilience: Bouncing Forward into Communities of Opportunity,” which will feature the following: Peter Calthorpe, principal of Calthorpe Associates; Paul Hawken, an environmentalist, entrepreneur, and author of Natural Capitalism: Creating the Next Industrial Revolution; and Dan Siegel, clinical professor of psychiatry, David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California at Los Angeles, and executive director, Mindsight Institute.

Other keynote speakers on the program include:

• Henk Ovink, principal of the Rebuild by Design competition, an initiative of the Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, will present key lessons learned from a competition that is spurring development and policy innovations in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.
• Margaret Davidson, senior leader for coastal inundation and resilience at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Ocean Service, will speak about the latest in climate science.
• Harriet Tregoning of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and a ULI trustee will discuss the federal government’s role in creating resilient cities.

There will also be preconference tours of Mission Creek and Ocean Beach, two areas that are working on adaptation strategies.
