Profiles of the following projects highlight best practices in integrating parks and open space into urban development:
- The Bentway in Toronto is a prime model of how to reimagine underused public space in the shadows of 20th-century infrastructure.
- Promenade Park in Fort Wayne, Indiana, spans the St. Marys River along its north and south banks and has become a symbol of community and rebirth for downtown Fort Wayne.
- Midtown Park in Houston was developed through a public/private partnership and transformed an abandoned property in central Houston into a dynamic and resilient urban oasis.
- Governors Island in New York served as a military base for over 200 years. The 172-acre (70 ha) island remained unoccupied for almost 10 years before reopening to visitors in 2005.
- Riverfront Park in Spokane, Washington, was designed to reconnect people to the Spokane River, restore ecology, support reengagement with the heritage of the Spokane Tribe, and to serve as a venue for community events.
