Erie, Pennsylvania, is on the cusp of change and can be reimagined if the city embraces the land use, economic, and technological changes that are affecting growth there and in other cities in the Rust Belt, a new ULI report says. ULI’s recommendations follow a visit to Erie last year by a group of land use and urban development experts convened to advise the Erie Downtown Development Council on how best to revitalize the downtown core.

Though real estate experts keep worrying about a possible recession, the U.S. economy continues to perform well, and the prospects for real estate investment are still strong, panelists said at a ULI New York event in Manhattan during January.

As one of the fastest growing and most populous metropolitan areas in the United States, the Phoenix metro area has seen some 40,000 apartments built since 2010, with demand and prices continuing to rise. Panelists speaking at the ULI Arizona Trends Day in Phoenix provided a glimpse of how different product types are filling needs for the housing-strapped region.

A graduate student team from the University of Cincinnati, two teams from the University of Texas at Austin, and a team with students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University have been selected as the four finalists for the 17th annual ULI Hines Student Competition, an ideas competition that challenges graduate students to devise a comprehensive design and development scheme for an actual site in an urban area. This year’s competition involves the redevelopment of a site in Cincinnati comprising portions of a highway, the central business district, and the central riverfront along the Ohio River.

A diverse group of experts presented a stark analysis of the rollout of federal Opportunity Zones during the recent ULI Housing Opportunity 2019 conference in Newport Beach, California. More than a year after the program was established, there is still confusion over regulations and implementation, they said.

At the recent ULI Europe Conference in London, Michael Gove, the current Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for the U.K., and Lord Adair Turner, chair of both the Energy Transitions Commission and the Institute for New Economic Thinking, discussed how inclusive and sustainable economic growth can be achieved while also addressing issues of climate change and wage inequality.

A new report from the ULI Greenprint Center for Building Performance shows that the real estate industry has made significant progress over the past 10 years in reducing carbon emissions and energy consumption while increasing asset value. Volume 10 of the Greenprint Performance Report™, which measures and tracks the performance of 8,916 properties owned by Greenprint’s members, demonstrates a 10-year improvement of 17 percent in energy use intensity, which is the annual energy consumption divided by gross floor area. The report also finds that Greenprint members are still on track to reduce carbon emissions by 50 percent by 2030.
