One of the most difficult challenges for those seeking to adopt emerging technologies in commercial real estate is justifying the cost of implementing such measures. A recent ULI event in Boston highlighted the benefits of the evolving standards on health and wellness by five industry practitioners.

The city of Dallas’s first-ever comprehensive housing policy is drawing significant interest from real estate professionals, but building affordable housing in one of the nation’s most income-segregated cities remains a significant challenge. A group of housing experts gathered in September to discuss the policy and affordable housing opportunities at an event hosted by ULI North Texas.

Internationally acclaimed artist and urban planner Theaster Gates was awarded the prize during the opening general session of the 2018 ULI Fall Meeting.

ULI Global Chairman Thomas W. Toomey welcomed Fall Meeting attendees by pointing to the Institute’s long history of leadership in Boston: ULI’s first real estate education conference—a precursor to the Fall Meeting—was held in Boston in 1941; and the last Fall Meeting in Boston was in 2001, less than a month after 9/11. “Due to the leadership of ULI Boston, that [2001] meeting turned out to be especially meaningful in terms of being together and sharing ideas on the future of cities. That same desire for fellowship and to share knowledge is very much evident at the meeting this week,” Toomey said.

At the 2018 Fall Meeting in Boston, Mayor Martin Walsh called on developers and other real estate professionals to help the city and state move housing and infrastructure initiatives forward.

An area along the eastern side of the Don River in Toronto has been selected as the study site for the 16th annual ULI Hines Student Competition.

In December, Moody’s Investors Service issued a report encouraging cities to invest in climate adaptation and mitigation. Cities will be evaluated in the future at least in part on how they prepare for both short-term climate “shocks” and longer-term trends associated with climate change. Moody’s is the largest credit rating agency to date to publicly outline how it evaluates climate change risk and integrates it into its credit rating assessments.
