ULI Global Chairman Thomas W. Toomey welcomed Fall Meeting attendees by pointing to the Institute’s long history of leadership in Boston: ULI’s first real estate education conference—a precursor to the Fall Meeting—was held in Boston in 1941; and the last Fall Meeting in Boston was in 2001, less than a month after 9/11. “Due to the leadership of ULI Boston, that [2001] meeting turned out to be especially meaningful in terms of being together and sharing ideas on the future of cities. That same desire for fellowship and to share knowledge is very much evident at the meeting this week,” Toomey said.

At the 2018 Fall Meeting in Boston, Mayor Martin Walsh called on developers and other real estate professionals to help the city and state move housing and infrastructure initiatives forward.

An area along the eastern side of the Don River in Toronto has been selected as the study site for the 16th annual ULI Hines Student Competition.

In December, Moody’s Investors Service issued a report encouraging cities to invest in climate adaptation and mitigation. Cities will be evaluated in the future at least in part on how they prepare for both short-term climate “shocks” and longer-term trends associated with climate change. Moody’s is the largest credit rating agency to date to publicly outline how it evaluates climate change risk and integrates it into its credit rating assessments.

A ULI panel of real estate and land use professionals convened in Boston last fall has identified key priorities to guide future real estate development that could be catalyzed by a proposed underground rail line linking two major transit hubs—North Station and South Station—and unifying two currently separate commuter rail systems.

Kansas City’s suburbs have fueled population growth in the metropolitan area over the last 70 years, a post–World War II pattern common across most large cities in the United States, and it does not appear that expansion is slowing anytime soon, even as parts of Kansas City’s urban core are also enjoying a resurgence, said panelists at a recent ULI event in Overland Park, Kansas.

Like many areas of the United States, California is facing a housing affordability crisis in its most populous area, and the San Francisco Bay area is ground zero, with sky-high rents and housing prices. To help address the issue, ULI San Francisco created the Housing the Bay initiative in early 2017. Through research, events, and workshops, the initiative aims to explore the underlying causes of the Bay Area’s high housing costs and inadequate housing supply and propose solutions.
