ULI is pleased to announce the release of the research report: Legacy Cities: From Rust to Revitalization. This report examines a cross section of small- and medium-sized cities that have used leadership, historic preservation, creative sources of funding, and other strategies to reinvent themselves.
The city of Foshan lies at the heart of one of China’s most fertile deltas, across the Pearl River from the Guangdong provincial capital of Guangzhou. With 7.3 million people and a gross domestic product topping US$100 billion, Foshan serves as an exemplar of both the achievements of and challenges faced by China’s emerging metropolitan areas. Yet, with all its success, Foshan faces the same challenges as most cities around the world—attracting and retaining talent.
For years, the ULI Advisory Services program has been providing timely advice to communities on strategic and important land use issues. The latest evidence of how these programs shape decision making is the Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial Library in the heart of downtown Washington, D.C.
Not too long ago, Charlotte, North Carolina, was an emerging metropolis attempting to solve its explosive population growth issues through sprawling development. However, over the past 20 years, it has consciously reinvented itself as a city of sidewalks.
One of the current trends in urban development is the integration of institutions with the neighborhoods surrounding them. In light of this, ULI recently conducted an advisory panel for D.C.’s Gallaudet University. Read more to learn about the panel’s recommendations to help Gallaudet with its master plan, with a specific focus on how the institution might better interact with its neighbors.
