Urban Land Institute (ULI) chief executive officer Patrick L. Phillips has been selected as one of 15 new members of the Federal City Council, an organization that works to enhance the economic and social progress of Washington, D.C., as the nation’s capital. Other new council members include Ted Leonsis, founder and chief executive officer of Monumental Sports and Entertainment; Kurt Schmoke, vice president and general counsel at Howard University; and Todd Rich, D.C. office managing director for Tishman Speyer.
Former District of Columbia Mayor Anthony Williams is the chief executive officer and executive director of the council, which is frequently called upon to evaluate and advise on large and complex projects that typically involve the private sector and multiple levels of government. The organization works with all levels and branches of government to increase effective communications and facilitate community development that serves the interests of both local and national stakeholders.
Council membership is limited to top business, professional, and civic leaders who have demonstrated expertise in various issues related to urban growth, such as housing, infrastructure, education, and public safety; and who have the resources available to support the council’s day-to-day operations.
“I am delighted to be part of such a prestigious organization, and to be serving with so many of Washington’s distinguished leaders,” Phillips said. “ULI has a long history of involvement with redevelopment in the city, including guidance on such major undertakings as Union Station, the Southwest waterfront, and more recently, the Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial Library. In addition, our members in the metropolitan area [comprising ULI Washington] have an extraordinary track record of community engagement and volunteerism. As ULI’s staff executive, and as a longtime D.C. resident, I find this opportunity very gratifying professionally and personally.”
