The ULI Foundation: 50 Years of Giving Back

As a charitable 501(c)3 organization that supports the Institute’s mission-driven programs—from district councils enacting change on a local level to UrbanPlan introducing the concepts of real estate and planning to the next generation of developers—the ULI Foundation is dedicated to supporting ULI’s mission of improving cities around the globe.

ULI’s members are generous and altruistic—people who truly care about improving the built environment to better serve communities around the world. They care about mission, they care about impact, and they care about results. And that is why so many choose to support ULI with their philanthropy.

Over the last 50 years, the Institute’s global focus, compounded by contemporary economic challenges, has made pursuit of this mission more important than ever. As the late Jim Curtis, past chair of the ULI Foundation and namesake of the James J. Curtis Society, used to say: “ULI’s impact is real. ULI’s impact is far-reaching. And ULI’s impact is transforming millions of lives around the world. ULI’s impact is your impact.”

“We impact everything—the economy, the environment—and we can accomplish something huge, more than just giving a dollar somewhere. If you give money to ULI, you’re going to get incredible leverage.”—Jeff Stack, ULI Foundation Board member, past ULIF chairman

In alignment with the ULI mission, the Foundation’s priorities represent the full spectrum of ULI programs and content across two major themes: the enhancement of education and mentorship initiatives and the expansion of the Institute’s global impact. Donors can designate gifts to unrestricted purposes that serve ULI’s greatest needs or to any specific area or program that they find personally meaningful.

Philanthropic gifts support every area of ULI, from existing programs such as Advisory Services panels to enhanced initiatives like Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to future centers that will enable the Institute to fulfill its promise to cities of the world. Contributions not only sustain these programs but also provide the financial resources and industry expertise necessary to make a difference.

From annual gifts that support ULI’s greatest needs, to leadership gifts that make meaningful change and growth possible, to planned gifts that help the organization lay a foundation for future work, donations to the ULI Foundation support the organization—the Urban Land Institute—that is best equipped to deliver on its world-changing vision. No other organization benefits from such a diversity of professional land use disciplines, such expertise and prominence among its membership, or such a global reach.

ULI Foundation Board member and immediate past ULI Global Chairman Tom Toomey said, “A dollar to ULI has the greatest impact on the greatest number of people in the greatest number of places. It does more good than money I can give elsewhere. We can change cities across the globe.”

Jeff Stack, ULI Foundation Board member and past ULIF chairman, agreed: “What ULI is doing and trying to do is critically important to individuals and families and the world. We impact everything—the economy, the environment—and we can accomplish something huge, more than just giving a dollar somewhere. If you give money to ULI, you’re going to get incredible leverage.”

Your investment through the ULI Foundation builds on the Institute’s unique capacity to change the world by making better places. Thank you for the generosity that makes this transformative work possible. Please visit the ULI Foundation at Why I Give to read why so many members invest in the Institute, and add your story.

Outside the United States, the ULI Charitable Trust supports mission-oriented work in other regions.
