The Urban Land 40 Under 40 program first launched in 2014, recognizing and celebrating the best and brightest among real estate and land use professionals under the age of 40 from around the world. Here we take a moment and look back at three members of the inaugural class—one each from the Americas, the Asia Pacific region, and Europe—who were profiled in ULI Connect, the ULI’s monthly member newsletter.

Carla Guerrera, vice president, planning and development, at Darwin, a developer of urban, mixed-use properties, is based in Vancouver, British Columbia. She is an active member of ULI British Columbia and served as a member of the program committee for the 2014 ULI Spring Meeting in Vancouver. She has also served on various committees for her district council and is known for her tenacity and ability to deliver on projects, both professionally and as a ULI member leader. She has extensive experience redeveloping brownfields into vibrant places, including the West Don Lands area in Toronto.

Karima Palafox, partner at Palafox Associates and Palafox Architecture Group, is a leading voice for sustainable development and a proponent of urban planning in the Philippines, a country where people are migrating to urban areas at a high rate. An active member of ULI Philippines, Palafox has served on several ULI Advisory Services panels throughout Asia, including, most recently, in Foshan, China. Through her involvement with ULI, she is sharing best practices and a balanced approach to the rapidly growing tourism industry, traffic congestion, and other land use challenges.

Nico Rottke, partner with the transaction advisory services group at EY Germany, spent ten years establishing the Real Estate Management Institute at EBS University of Business and Law in Wiesbaden. The institute is now one of the premier academic programs for graduate-level study of real estate in Europe. In his current position, Rottke leads a team charged with identifying capital sources for real estate development projects throughout Germany. He is an active member of ULI Germany, serving within the Young Leaders Group, as vice chair for research, and on the advisory board.

Urban Land magazine will be accepting submissions until April 21 for the 40 Under 40 class of 2016, which will be announced at the ULI 2016 Fall Meeting in Dallas.

Archana Pyati was a Senior Manager and Impact Writer with ULI from 2014 to 2018.
